Devon – Day 1

We’re on a holiday with our friends, for they have a house there in Devon specially for holidays, and we’ve been invited! It took ages to get there – so, so long we had about four or five stopping stations. We all went in Grace’s car, who was the friend we went with; her sisters and her mum came along too. It felt like ages – we kept swapping from Grace and I in the boot to Evie and Tilly in the boot: and that, of course, meant that Annie couldn’t move to the boot because of her seat, but she got over it eventually and we took it in turns to keep her company in the back.

After lots of stops and hours and hours of driving, starting from quarter past nine and ending at four, we sighed after a great journey and unlocked the door. Everyone shouted, “Yay!” and “Whoop!” at the sight of the cosy little house. We laid down our suitcases and bags and crates, and hurried upstairs all overloaded with our teddies up to our beds, and there we put our duvets on the correct beds and settled in.

But not so soon! It was still only about four, and we were excited and needed to play, but we didn’t know where. Ruth called out suddenly, “Let’s go to the beach! We’ll all bring our swimsuits, and wade in the sea, and see the gulls and the ships!” So we gathered up our swimming stuff and jumped into the car, and off we went to Torcross Beach, a pebbly one with a reliable, high – but cold – tide!

We zapped off our clothes and dashed into the oceans in our swimsuits. At first, we were careful to go in too deep, for we had been told that the Torcross sea had a habit for being steep; and I made up a chant saying, “Get me, waves, get me ‘cos I’m free! Get me waves, get me ‘cos I’m free!” as loud as we could, slapping rocks and stones together. It worked, too, it was our special chant; and after a couple of warm-up lapping waves, there was a rise in the middle of the sky, and in the seas, too, and we all shouted “- Get me ‘cos I’m freee!” and it would come knocking us onto the pebbles!

Then we went out for dinner in a very tasty pub called the ‘Start Bay Inn’, where we had haddock and cod with chips, and free icecream and sauces – I had butterscotch sauce, and so did Tilly; Evie had chocolate; and Gracie and Annie had strawberry.

Now that we’ve come home, I’m ready for bed and for a new morning in Devon tomorrow!
