Didn’t really enjoy this book very much. I’ve never liked Michael Morpurgo very much anyways but I’d heard that this was one of his best books so gave it go. Result wasn’t exactly pleasing.
Bertie was born in South Africa and raised in a tight enclosure around the house to keep him away from all the hyenas and lions and elephants in the area. His mother was often ill and his father was always busy, so he had no one to play with and nothing to do if he had.
One day, whilst watching the wild animals longingly from his “pen”, Bertie saw a great big lioness and her little cub approaching. But there was something interesting about the cub—he was pure white. A few days later, Bertie heard his father come home announcing that he had killed a great lioness, and Bertie knew that the little white cub had been orphaned.
Years later, Bertie was sent to boarding school in England and he is separated from his beloved cub, whom he and his mother had brought up lovingly in their home. What will Bertie do?
