Richard II, a true-story king, was hated by his people, who much preferred the idea of having Henry Bullingbrook as their king, a lord who was disinherited by Richard. When the old king realises his mistakes, he dies a near-heroic death in prison when Bullingbrook was crowned.
We watched a dramatisation of the play called ‘The Hollow Crown’, which I think was better than the play, which I found a little dull. Richard was a brilliant actor and he matched the silliness of himself in the play, as Bullingbrook matched his sarcasm and wit.
I think out of all Shakespeare’s plays that I’ve read, Richard wasn’t my favourite. I think Macbeth is a much more interesting tale to read.
