In my opinion, there is only so far a short story can really go. But Cynthia Rylant’s
Missing May crosses that line. A well-written tale with a simple storyline loosely based upon her own childhood experiences, Rylant’s novel will never cease to amaze. Many of us have dealt with the issues that the protagonist, Summer, dealt with throughout this book, but never before—or so I believe—have they been written down in such an interesting way, with such a new light on them.
