This book, a coming-of-age novel, is centred around Julie Trelling as she lives with her Aunt Cordelia in the country. It starts with Julie aged seven and finishes when she is seventeen. It is a sort of Anne-of-Green-Gables-esque book, but I actually preferred to it to Anne’s story. I thought that the characters were slightly more in-depth; one of the reasons, no doubt, that Uncle Haskell was my favourite character. I hated him, but he was not one-sided at all—as many book characters can be—or even two-sided, or three-sided! There were all sorts of interesting aspects about him, which made him such a fascinating and realistic character.
