Upon discovering an oddly secret note in a book by an Icelandic alchemist called Arne Saknussemm, Axel Lidenbrock is dragged into the centre of the earth by his over-excited uncle, Professor Otto Lidenbrock, guided by a silent, stoic Icelander, Hans. Axel’s pretty fiancee Grauben sits back in Germany from whence the little group came, worrying to death about her husband-to-be. But she need not worry—or need she?
Soon the Lidenbrocks—and even Hans—become quickly endangered. With no water to drink and barely any food to eat (and what seems like monsters on their trail) Axel is adamant that they hurry back to the surface, back to safety. But Professor Lidenbrock is eager and over-excited, and refuses to leave. Hans, sure that Axel’s uncle is his master, will not return to even the crust of the earth without being bade permission by Otto.
Minor hazards turn into sheer danger—will the little party make it back up to the Earth’s surface?
