Annie was excited. Today, in the afternoon, she was to see her frightening aunt. Of course, you’d think it’d be silly to be seeing a frightening aunt, but to little Annie it definitly was not. Annie had seen this aunt of hers before, and she was rather scary but also fun. This was because scary means Annie would be scared, so she could then run away to a different world…
At first when her father had told her she was to go, she went upstairs right away in an extremely bad temper. Now she’d realised – it might be fun. She was right – but will she be able to get home?
“Annie! It’s four o’clock – time to go. Apperently the coach man ‘ll be here now (ooh, here he is) and he’ll take you down to Dunstable. Then Mr. Smith will come and take you away to the house. Also – you know you don’t really like Aunt Lilly?”
“Yes.”
“Well, you’ll love old Mr. Smith. He’s the jolliest, nicest, most adorable man ever! Better than me. I’m telling you. Oh, the coach man’s impatient. Better get your sandals on. Chop chop!” Annie’s father took a jacket from a rack on the door and helped her put it on. He picked up her yellow sandals and polished the buckle with a clean tissue and slipped it onto hetr delicate, narrow feet. “Good luck and farewell,” he grinned at his daughter as he watched the coach slowly move away…
