Yesterday, we went to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. Here we learnt all about the planes and tanks and people in the war. Some of the facts we already knew as we’ve been before, but others we didn’t.
We went on a cool van-bus thing first, where a lady drove us to Hangar 4. On the way, we saw loads of planes on the runway. In here, we learnt all about ‘The Battle of Britain’. Do you know what that is? It’s when Hitler (head of the German Army) tried to destroy the RAF (England’s Royal Air Force) in the sky. As they’d already taken up loads of other countries, they had enough good pilots to be able to win. However, we had to train lots of people very quickly. But, even though it cost lots of money and took a long, long time, we won!!
We also went in a big room called ‘The Operations Room’. People actually went in there in the war and told people where the bombs were to land and things. It was really realistic AS IT WAS REAL, and it had type-writers and things in it. Unfortunately, we couldn’t go in and use them as there were gates there saying ‘If Anyone Crosses This Gate, an Alarm Will Sound’ 🙁 Maybe it was a good idea to stay out, like we chose!
Before going to the Concorde, we nipped into a room which had telephones which tell you what happened in the past when you dialled certain numbers. We also found this suit and hat, and we tried it on and soluted – very smart indeed! There were games and films and all sorts – it was really cool!
Then we had lunch. Unlike our plans, we went in the Concorde afterwards. But first, we did a workshop. First we picked up some lego vans and airplanes and placed them on a map where we thought they went. After that, the man teaching us took us downstairs to a plane called ‘Comet 4’. We searched in a suitcase to see whether or not the owner was a boy or a girl (a bit strange), where we found out that the owner was a boy, not a girl. It was weird, because there was a girl’s coat in it, but Mummy said it was a boy’s. We knew it was for a boy because of this small magazine-thing with the word ‘Boy’s _______’ something on it.
Then he took us inside the plane. The seats were really comfy, and the drivers’ place was full of buttons and things – I don’t know how I could possibly fly a plane with all those buttons and knobs and handles! A man there told us all about it. He told us that little children (without their parents) would go to their houses from Boarding School on planes all by themselves – this was called ‘The Lollipop Flight’, as it was all children!
That was when the workshop ended. We went in a cool museum with loads of knobs and handles and buttons to press and turn. There were films and things too (a bit like the one we nipped into before lunch). But then we had to go home…and even though I was tired and had badly hurt my foot, I had to busily rush to gym!
