For a few days I’ve been an only child. And why is this? Because Tilly has disappeared since Wednesday! Two night sleepover at her friend’s Katie’s house, met up in the middle to take her home – and she’s disappeared off for another three nights! Who knows when she’s going to come back? She is meant to today – just about at half twelvish – but will she come home? Perhaps she’ll say “No, I want to stay at Katie’s,” or she might say “Owie…bye, Katie! I’ll see you tomorrow!” Which wouldn’t be good, because then Katie would tell Christine (her mum) that Tilly said she’d see her tomorrow, and then Christine would have to go through all her text messages (and emails) and in the end Christine would go mad at not knowing what time or where, because they live very far away from Wrest Park or something compared to us.
Anyway:
What’s it like being an only child?
Good question. It is quiet – no arguments – but also lonely. Of course you get more time with your mum and dad, but less time really doing other things. Say you want to play dolls or lego or something, you don’t have anyone to play it with you. And if you’re watching telivision on the sofa, you don’t have anyone to snuggle up with. So these sentences are all a taste of loneliness.
It is good that you don’t have an older sister faffing around about teenage stuff, and thinking at how much her birthday is going to be so soon when actually it’s all in August. :O
So it’s good and bad being an only child?
Yes – pretty much.
You don’t feel too lonely?
Nope. A little – you’d probably miss your sister or brother (here it’s sister) but you’d still like a few days of peace and quiet.
OK. “Greg, you can go and live with Grandma and Granddad if you want to.”
“No, Greg can’t!” “Greg, don’t go! You’ll eat too many sweeties and chocolate bars and you’ll stay up too late! DON’T!!!”
