Wales Holiday Day 4: Leominster and Croft Castle

This day we were going home so we packed everything into the car. Before we left we had a walk around Leominster.

They had beautiful antique shops, and bottles and china and wedge wood stuff that I saw. They had old furniture and – oh, I could have stayed in that place forever! I simply didn’t want to leave. There was a market and little old ladies. As we walked back, I said, “I’ll live in that house.” I pointed to a very splendid looking huge town house! Then we saw the sign and it said ‘Entry is FREE’. We couldn’t believe our luck! We spoke to the nice ladies inside and we were able to go in for free indeed! In the front room they had a… grandfather clock!

In the afternoon we went straight to Croft Castle. They didn’t have any audio guides there, but it was still quite good. It was smaller than I thought it would be, and it was a bit more housey than castley, but it was still very nice. They had a talk about The Wars of the Roses. In the chapel they had the tomb of Richard Croft, who lived in the castle as a marcher lord. He lived with his wife Eleanor, who looked after Edward IV’s children, who later became the Princes in the Tower. She was very upset when they disappeared. The Croft family lived right through the Wars of the Roses as Yorkists. It was amazing to see where he actually was, with his wife Eleanor (or maybe Elenor in Medieval times, or something like that). It was really cool. I loved that chapel.

Then we drove home. It was a very long journey with quite a couple of queues, but we made it up with listening to ‘R.E.M.’ and ‘The Levellers’. When we got home, I was singing, ‘Losing my Religion… This means nothing to me, to me… to me…’ because it was stuck in my head..

Overall, it was a great holiday! I enjoyed it loads in Wales – got two countries in one photograph!
