Starring: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski
Set in post-apocalyptic 2020 (they certainly got that bit right), actor-writer-director John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place is one of those horror films that will stick with you from a long time. It was completely different from anything that I’ve ever watched. The characters are all living in a world haunted by monsters that prey by sound: by making no noise at all, the family A Quiet Place follows are relatively safe… aren’t they?
My mum and sister had both watched this film at the cinema when it first came out, but this was my first time watching it. Though the concept of none of the characters being allowed to talk was certainly new and interesting, it actually got a bit annoying sometimes─the whole thing was almost completely silent at all times, with only the occasional quiet, subtle background music to take the edge of that disturbing stillness. Having said that, the silence did make the jump-scares all the more terrifying, as the sounds jumped out at you from absolutely nowhere─there wasn’t even any telltale suspenseful music to get you prepared.
Overall, I think this film deserves a solid 3 out of 5 stars. I can’t imagine that the sequel, which comes out in March, will be too different from its predecessor, so I’ll probably give that one a miss. I’d say there are a fair few horror films out there that beat A Quiet Place.
