Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro

It’s been a while actually since we last watched a film, and I think this one was a good way to get back into them. I was sceptical at first because I thought Joker would be some sort of supervillain story that I wouldn’t enjoy, but there was actually very little reference to Batman at all. The film instead focused on Arthur Fleck, a party clown, who is shunned and isolated by the society around him. Unable to cope, Fleck begins a rapid descent into madness, and the backstory for one of the most iconic villains is expertly spun.

I really enjoyed this film. I thought the acting was just amazing which it had to be, as Joker is one of those films with little background music, where few words are spoken and it’s all about the implications rather than having everything spelled out for you. It’s dark and shocking and also kind of sad, and I really liked how they used the character of the Joker as a sort of physical personification of madness itself. Overall, I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who likes these sort of dark, quiet psychological thriller movies.
