The Blind Side (2009)

Starring: Sandra Bullock

This film was a true story about Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), a homeless African-American boy who was adopted by an upper-class family. The Tuohy family both helped him with his school grades and pushed him to his full potential when it came to football. He is now a renowned offensive tackle who played in the NFL for eight seasons before retiring.

I’d give this film 3 stars. The acting was quite good; the character of Oher himself didn’t have much to say really, but Sandra Bullock did a good job of being the whole confident, no-nonsense, wealthy American woman, and I think that Jae Head who played her bubbly little son S.J. deserves a shout out too!

That said, the film was also very cheesy and a bit overdone. The real Michael Oher himself said that he was unimpressed with The Blind Side, claiming that it was a poor representation of his life and career. I also sat down to watch this film thinking that it would be about football, but it was much more about the people and their lives and blah blah blah. Oher’s mother (Sandra Bullock) was just annoying, and Oher himself was so absolutely gormless and thick that his character portrayal was more of an insult to the real Oher than an accurate representation of him.

There were also some parts of the film that just didn’t make any sense at all. For example, there was a moment where Oher’s tutor started going on and on in a really dark voice about how the University of Tennessee buried people under the football grounds and how you could hear their bones crunch when you played on the pitch. No one touched on this topic again and it was just really bizarre and random.
