I read Coraline very quickly because it was rather short, but mainly because I liked it so much and I never put it down. I love the way it was written; here are some examples of Gaiman’s funny parts, creepy parts, and just wonderfully intriguing parts.
‘”We… we could be friends, you know,” said Coraline.
“We could be rare specimens of an exotic breed of African dancing elephants,” said the cat. “But we’re not. At least,” it added cattily, after darting a brief look at Coraline, “I’m not.”‘
‘On the first day Coraline’s family moved in, Miss Spink and Miss Forcible made a point of telling Coraline how dangerous the well was, and they warned her to be sure to keep away from it. So Coraline set off to explore for it, so that she knew where it was, to keep away from it properly.’
‘We are small but we are many
We are many we are small
We were here before you rose
We will be here when you fall.’
‘She looked at the girl in the mirror and the girl in the mirror looked back at her. I will be brave, thought Coraline. No, I am brave.’
So you can see for yourself how well Gaiman wrote Coraline. I will leave the adventure of reading it to you.
