This book was absolutely awful. I never really liked Morpurgo, but this was just too much. I didn’t even finish the book, it was so bad, but from the half-way point I got to I could tell immediately how awful the story was. It was supposed to be about this boy, Tommo, who has to go to war with his brother Charlie, but Morpurgo didn’t make this exciting, sad, dramatised, or full of action, as many people say it is. I got half way through before pleading my mum not to make me read it. She started from the beginning and read it to me aloud to make sure I understood what was going on, but when she got to the part where I had stopped she said it was so boring that she was falling asleep, and so she told me I didn’t have to read it. For people who like classics like me, and for those who do so and haven’t read Morpurgo before, I advise that you leave it on the shelf for somebody else.
