John, Titty, Susan and Roger are going on an exciting adventure. They’re allowed to take the boat, Swallow, to their island – later named Wild Cat Island – in the Sea, so they like to call it. They soon find violence on the Amazons, crew of the Amazon boat, Captain Nancy Blackett (or Ruth) and Mate Peggy Blackett. Nancy shares no time to lose – pirates or no pirates, they launch attack on the Swallows and capture ‘their’ so-called island back.
But these two crews are friendly enough, not like the natives; they befriend each other after parleys and a few wars just to make sure, and then turn their noses on Captain Flint (or Uncle Jim). As his two nieces Peggy and Nancy revenge war on him since last year’s attacks, he decides that no pirates can overthrow him.
Unfortunate for the Swallows, Captain Flint believes that they are the Amazons – he can’t tell from so far away in his houseboat! He sends notes to John and Susan suggesting they leave his houseboat alone, thank you very much!
Soon, though, the Swallows and Amazons befriend Captain Flint too after finding the stolen burglary item.
Wasn’t the best fan of this book, seemed quite basic and apparently needed you to know what a ship’s bow is, the painter, the buoyant or whatever it’s called, and so on. Seemed also as though one chapter was just description and the next was just dialogue. Good book though for those who love boats!
