Hugo’s father, a clock-maker, died in a tragic father. Hugo was then looked after by his uncle, a nasty inebriate who fixed the clocks in a Metro train station in Paris. One night, Hugo’s uncle goes missing, and Hugo is left in charge to secretly fix the clocks and a mysterious broken automaton which his father brought to him before he died. Within no time, he has resorted to stealing in order to get food and drink.
But is there more to that automaton than Hugo thought before?
I thought this book was simply ‘OK’. I thought it was very modern and easy-to-read. It was designed for much younger readers, I think. However, the actual plot was quite good.
