When Violet, Klaus and Sunny are sent away to the village of V.F.D., they think it might hold the answer to the secret their friends the Quagmire triplets told them of. But they were wrong; it only stood for the Village of Fowl Devotees, for this village was full of crows, that would roost in all sorts of unlikely places. They are raised for a while by kind – and also rather unhelpful – citizen Hector, who is building a machine that they can all escape in one day.
But not for long. Count Olaf comes to the village of V.F.D. under the disguise of a detective. But detecting is not what he is really up to…
