Titus Groan (Gormenghast, #1)

Rating: 3/5

** spoiler alert ** When Titus Groan is born, the contained little world at Gormenghast Castle is turned upside-down. The Lady Fuchsia is annoyed by the birth of her little brother; the Lord Sepulchrave and the Countess Gertrude, Titus’ parents, are indifferent; Nannie Slagg’s to-do list increases dramatically: but now an heir has been born to Gormenghast and there is hope for the survival of the castle’s seventy-seventh generation.

This book was quite boring at times, but at others it was very good. Would give three-and-a-half stars if I could! Steerpike and Doctor Prunesquallor were by far my favourite characters, purely because of their eccentricities and individuality. They were characters that never before had been captured and written in a book.

I thought that the very last paragraph was very interesting:

“And there shall be a flame-green daybreak soon. And love itself will cry for insurrection! For tomorrow is also a day – and Titus has entered his stronghold.”
