Week #13, 29 March – 04 April 2021

Monday

Today I started off the morning with a piano lesson, which I narrowly missed because the clocks going forward confused me a lot, and I had about 2 minutes to get there after I woke up!

After my lesson, I went onto maths, moving onto the next section of Ratio and Proportion Problems. In physics, having finished the text and questions in the entirety of the GCSE Electricity topic (yay!), I went onto Unit 3, Waves. I learnt about the differences between transverse and longitudinal waves, refraction and reflection and the Doppler effect. Personally I find this a much more interesting topic than how to rewire a plug!

In the afternoon, I did some Latin, translating passages from English into Latin. You can read a bit more about that here.

When we went on our walk this afternoon, it was so hot we had to take off our coats and cardigans – summer weather! When I got back, I made some notes on the next chapter of my Ancient History book and answered some questions to consolidate! I now know all about the different Dynasties of Ancient Egypt and the achievements of the pharaohs within them.

Now I’m going to go and sit on the sofa and eat biscuits while watching the Bake-Off!

Tuesday

This morning I started on maths, doing more problems with ratios and proportion, and then did some more Latin with my mum. After lunch, I made some delicious chocolate cookies and went on a walk in the sun ─ it’s turned ridiculously hot all of a sudden, though apparently it’s going to snow on Monday 😕

I also worked through another chapter of History of the Ancient World and read some Atlas Shrugged. It’s taken me a good hundred pages to get really into Ayn Rand’s philosophical fiction novel, but now I’m absolutely in love with it. In the evening, I watched the X-Files with my step-dad and ate one of my homemade cookies.

Wednesday

Today I started off the morning with some yoga/stretching, using an app I recently installed that apparently gets you doing the splits in 30 days! Then─it being a Wednesday, which means no maths or physics─I started some work on Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, the first play in the Oresteia. I’ve been doing a Massolit course specifically on Agamemnon and writing up my notes into an analysis. Out of the Iliad, the Odyssey and Agamemnon, I’d rank them in reverse order: Agamemnon first (specifically Ted Hughes’ wonderful translation!), the Odyssey and last but by no means least, the Iliad.

In the afternoon, I read some more of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. My favourite character at the moment is, of course, Dagny Taggart. I think she’s a little bit like me! I’m only 10% of the way through, but I’m already really enjoying it. If it ended now at 10%, and I had to rate it, I’d probably give it 4 stars out of 5─a very high score judging from my standards! Plus, I’m told it gets better.

After reading some Atlas Shrugged, I also started taking notes on the tenth chapter of my ancient history book. Here’s some of the work I’ve done so far:

Thursday

In the morning, I started off the day with the splits app’s morning stretching routine again. Then I came down and did some maths and physics─ratios in maths, and longitudinal and transverse waves in physics. I wouldn’t say that the concept of physics (at GCSE level, at any rate 😂) is particularly difficult; the hundreds of new formulae in every unit is the bit that gets me!

In the afternoon, I did some more work on the Oresteia using my Massolit course. I watched videos on the characterisation of fate-struck Agamemnon and his scheming wife Clytemnestra and wrote my notes up into my analysis, which is nearly complete now. 🙂

Friday

Today, I decided I’d had enough physics for the week (that’s the thing with home-schooling. Had enough physics? Well don’t do physics then), so instead I spent the morning after my maths session working on my Agamemnon analysis. I actually finished that today, so look out for it!

Weekend

With Matilda at Nanny’s and my step-brother William here, William and Andy and I spent the majority of the weekend playing games on the Wii! It was quite hilarious playing Monkey Ball last night, because the controls weren’t working properly and we all came out with 0 points (apparently I had the best set of 0 points, because I got to choose the minigame every single time). I also read a lot of Atlas Shrugged, wrote my story and blog, and went on a walk in the mild weather.
